Onboarding

Steps

  1. Read the lab manual.

  2. Submit an Issue (click on Octocat in upper right of the lab manual) regarding the lab manual—i.e., provide a suggestion, comment, or raise a question. You need a GitHub account in order to do this, so if you don’t have one, create one.

  3. Accept eventual invitation to join CCM Lab organization on GitHub.

  4. Complete TCPS 2 training in order to be added to our human ethics protocol.

  5. Add yourself to eligible list of RISe researchers by following the Self-Registering steps at: RISe Access. Once an account is created, new users will receive their researcher numbers via email.

  6. Once your RISe account is created, let Hyosub know so he can add you to our study protocols.

  7. Provide supervisor/lab manager (current lab manager is Eric) with your contact info (UBC email, CWL, gmail address, phone). The first two are required to grant you access to the mailing list and lab email. The supervisor/lab manager will put in a request to our IT person, Robert Lovin.

  8. Send Hyosub a photo (best if .jpg or .png and square dimensions) of yourself and short bio (year, major, and hobbies) so he can add you to the lab website.

  9. Request access to the Resource Access document by contacting the Lab Manager/Supervisor.

  10. Go to the lab reading list and start reading the review article by Kim, Avraham, and Ivry (2021), and the first 20 pages of the review on motor learning by Krakauer et al (2019).

  11. Visit the Data Management to understand our data storage and Dropbox.

  12. Check out the Resources page and start teaching yourself to code and any other necessary skills for your project.

  13. If you will be interfacing with our Kinarm, start familiarizing yourself with how to safely and effectively use it by first reading this Welcome Letter and then read through the sections on safe usage in the Operator Guide. Next, go through Kinarm Academy for Basic Researchers to learn how to program tasks!

Research Assistant Training for Data Collection

  1. Teaching/Explanation session - Experimenter provides Research assistant with information regarding the experiment and the data they are looking to collect. This will allow the RA to understand the point of the experiment.

  2. Research Assistant Shadowing - RA shadows a testing session conducted by the main experimenter. Here, the RA is expected to take notes on the data collection procedure and questions that the participant may ask.

  3. Practice with Main Experimenter - RA will run a practice data collection session on the main experimenter. This allows the RA to practice the script and allows the experimenter to correct any mistakes.

  4. Supervised Data Collection Session - The RA will conduct a data collection session on a real participant with the supervision of the main experimenter.

  5. Once comfortable, the RA can now collect data on their own! :)
